Pithari Red 2020 by Afianes Wines.
A natural dry red from a 1.5 hectare Fokiano vineyard in Raches, Profitis Ilias, at about 600 m. The grapes are pressed by hand in a granite press made of five large stones and fermented in clay jars, called pithari, buried in the earth outside the winery.
Pithari Red features:
- 100% Fokiano, PGI Ikaria, from vines of 50 and 10 years old on sandy clay from decomposed granite. Organically farmed, with a yield of 25 hl/ha.
- Grapes are destemmed and pressed by hand, then macerate on the skins for 3 to 5 days. Fermentation runs on the wine's own indigenous yeasts in the buried pithari.
- No mechanical intervention and no filtration, with only minimal sulphur added before bottling. 1,800 bottles produced.
- Opaque red-brown with orange highlights. Ripe forest fruits, cherry, lychee and blackberry on the nose; sour and wild cherry on the palate with intense minerality and a wet granite finish.
- Made for long ageing. Serve at 14°C. Afianes suggests sweet-and-sour dishes, large fresh fish with herbs, rabbit stew, or Greek dishes such as giouvetsi and gemista.
- 75cl.
- 12.5% ABV.
